As an admission officer at a highly selective college, my office was immediately off the lobby and I would often hear families asking questions at the end of their tours. It took endless patience not to run out and say, “You’re asking the wrong questions!” They were so caught up in getting in – the rankings, SAT scores, and other numbers- that they overlooked the actual experience.  Things like do students compete against each other or against their own expectations? Is it a collaborative culture? Is it hands-on learning, and what does that look like? Will professors know who I am and write my letters of rec for grad school? What do students do on a Friday night? Pro Tip: if you don’t automatically answer “study”, let’s talk about some Ivy schools you should avoid!

Smart College Admission was founded to help families ask the RIGHT questions. We know there is no checklist for a “perfect” college applicant. You are not a piece of clay anyone can mould into a work of art for some anonymous application reader. We work with students to find an academic, social, and economic fit. For some students, that includes name-brand colleges that everyone recognizes. For other students, it is the hidden gems you might miss without professional guidance. Either way, when you find the college that values you for who you are, you will be amazed at how rich AND enjoyable college can be. Way better than high school!
